Best season EVER? Submitted by Prof. Chronotis on Wed, 07/14/2010 - 11:38am. What fun, to hear all of you so enthused and excited about this past season! Not surprising, just fun. I agreed with everything that was said (even when you disagreed -- that's how egalitarian I am) so I'm now trying to figure out why I was surprised when James said this was his favorite season ever. I can't think of any reason why it couldn't or shouldn't be -- but it still surprised me.
My son and I had a lively discussion about this after listening to 209 ... he wondered if James meant for the new series, or best season since 1963?! A good question! It also had us going back and thinking about the previous new-series seasons in turn, and found that we'd be hard-pressed to put anything above that first glorious year with Christopher Eccleston... but we started talking about Matt Smith and -- here's where I think Ken nailed it -- now we're thinking just on the strength of this actor and his conception of the Doctor -- maybe this IS the best season of the new series.
But is the first Moffatt year the best EVER? I think I'd still hold out for one of the Hinchcliffe years, probably season 14, but still ... hmm ...

It may not be the worst season ever IF you count from 1962 onward but if you count 2005 to 2010 it IS IMO the worst season ever. It ranks a full 55 from me and that's rounding up. Several stories this season were ten out of tens (THE LODGER, AMY'S CHOICE, TIME OF THE ANGELS, VAMPIRES OF VENICE, the first part of the SILURIANS remake, and...that might be it) but many others were one out of tens or worse including the awful opening story, the illogical silly and poorly plotted second story, and the third story was maybe a 3 out of ten. The overall arc was not thought out well or not presented that well, the companion is played by one of the worst actresses ever to grace that title, people die and come back all the time now, the show had no urgency, no excitment. and two second parts of a two parter were big let downs (FLESH AND BLOOD gets a zero from me and the second part of the SILURIANS remake gets a six). The two part season finale is a 5/10 and a 0/10. Matt Smith is a good actor but even he was awful in it. The season made me lose who energetic hope and fevror I have for the series since it's return in 2005. 2005 to 2009 made me LOVE a show that in the past I only liked. This new season, call if season five if you will, or season 29 or whatever, made me really feel like not being a DW fan any longer as if shaking this show is that easy. If we get two more seasons like this one, it might be accomplished. I'll always love the idea of DOCTOR Who but it's too bad the output of a season like this one, almost never lives up to the idea that this show can go anywhere and do anything and often it's about people running around a musuem set with left over Dalek props, left over characters, cop out endings, and no real sense of care or urgency. In my opinion that two parta ending just about ruined the entire season. Individually some of the ones I mentioned above were as good as anything DW ever put out but when you add up the very overwhelming bada of this season, it just does not measure up to a good season let alonea great one or the best one egver. It does come close to worst ever but see Or rather don't see TRIAL OF A TIME LORD and the season after that that gave TIKME AND THE RANI and PARADISE TOWERS or even the one after that that gave us the awful HAPPINESS PATROL.
For me, the show is down in quality on almost everyh level with the exception of Matat Smith but if he acts as poor as he did i ntahe two part ending, we is in trouble.Or at least that's how I feel
